  • Canabliss: Weaving Artistry Across Mediums and Music

In the dynamic world of electronic music, Canabliss stands out not just for her compelling sounds but also for her seamless integration of multiple art forms into her music production. As a Toronto-based artist deeply engaged with music, photography, and digital art, Canabliss brings a unique perspective to the electronic scene. In this in-depth blog post, she shares insights into how her diverse interests influence her music and how the vibrant city of Toronto shapes her artistic expression. Exploring Creativity: An In-depth Q&A with Canabliss Q: Your artistic journey encompasses a broad spectrum of mediums, from music to photography and digital art. How do these diverse forms of expression influence your music production, and do you find that they intersect in your creative process? A: "I definitely have a profound appreciation for art in all different forms! It’s a really fun challenge to try and harmonize different elements together for my project. It’s important for me, and I’m sure all kinds of artists, to keep the creative flow intact and sometimes when you work too much in one category it can be easy to get burnt out. I find it extremely helpful to transition over to another creative outlet when confronted with that feeling, and in turn, it really helps to sustain the motivation for me!" Q: As a Toronto-based artist, how has the city's cultural and musical landscape shaped your sound and approach to music? Are there specific elements of Toronto's scene that you incorporate into your work? A: "Toronto is truly where my love for music and shows began. I started going to concerts and music festivals in the city when I was really young and that certainly helped immerse me into the scene and shape me into the artist I’ve become today. Unfortunately, the music scene in Toronto took a super huge hit during covid and really slowed down for a while, thankfully it is just starting to pick back up now! In general, Toronto has a multitude of different cultures, and growing up around all of them taught me to appreciate so many different diverse styles of music and art in general. It definitely reflects in my music as I love incorporating ethnic inspirations into my songs!" Q: Your music is known for its immersive qualities. Can you share insights into how you craft your soundscapes and what you aim for listeners to experience through your music? A: "I really just get into a specific flow state and this allows it all to come together based on whatever emotions and feelings I’m working through at the time. Sometimes I like to add cinematic elements which really help make my music become more immersive. While the ultimate goal is to captivate and resonate with whomever is listening, the most important thing is to have fun when I’m writing, that’s when I know there will be a positive impact for the listeners." Q: The electronic music scene is continuously evolving, with new sounds and genres emerging regularly. How do you stay innovative in your music production, and are there any new directions you're excited to explore in your upcoming projects? A: "It’s honestly amazing how the scene is always evolving, but sometimes as an artist, it can be a bit daunting to try and keep up with all the latest trends and genres emerging! That being said, I still find all the new music super inspiring and am always trying to stay innovative. Sometimes I really am best at writing when I have specific emotions I need to express and I think it reflects in my music in a special way that hopefully resonates with the listeners. In my sets, I really love to incorporate different genres and am definitely excited to branch out and explore more production with styles different than what I normally would produce." Q: Beyond music, you have a keen interest in the digital world and video games. How do these interests influence your music, and do you see them playing a role in your future projects or performances? A: "I truly have a huge love for video games and am constantly finding inspiration from them. Whether that be the in-game music, design aesthetics, or immersive storytelling, I really think video games have played a large role in my artistic journey. I find that whenever I play a game too much, my music even starts reflecting it a little bit. It is certainly an absolute dream to be able to get my songs into some video games in the future!" A Symphony of Sounds and Sights Canabliss's approach to blending her various artistic passions into her music not only sets her apart in the electronic music scene but also speaks to her innovative spirit. As she continues to navigate and shape the sonic world, her multidisciplinary approach ensures that her music not only resonates on a sonic level but also visually and emotionally with her audience.

  • Elevating the Beat: Dr. Fresch's Signature Sound and Vision

In a dance music landscape that thrives on the constant evolution of sound, Dr. Fresch has distinguished himself with a unique blend of house, hip-hop, and midtempo beats. His music isn't just heard; it's felt—a pulsating, energetic rush that has captivated fans worldwide. As the mastermind behind House Call Records, Dr. Fresch has also become a pivotal figure in shaping the future of house music. Through an unfiltered Q&A, Dr. Fresch shares insights into his creative philosophy, the genesis of House Call Records, and the journey that has led him to where he is today. A Unique Fusion: Q&A with Dr. Fresch Q: Since launching the Dr. Fresch brand, you've developed a signature sound that blends elements of house, hip-hop, and midtempo. What has been your guiding philosophy in merging these genres, and how do you maintain a fresh approach in your productions? A: "My philosophy in developing the Dr. Fresch sound was to find a recipe of my favorite genres that fit into the dance music world; a concoction of West Coast Hip Hop, blog house, and nu-metal. My process of maintaining, updating, and maturing that brand is to find natural additions to the melting pot from my peers; I want my music to be timeless so I aim to only update my production process with instrumentation and FX that I believe will work decades from now. I also progress my sound through my DJ sets - by listening to my audience and finding some nexus between what I love and they love, the story naturally tells itself. That balance of staying true to the sound I worked so hard to find and cherry-picking my favorite things about music at the moment is it! It's gotta still sound like me and it's gotta be fresh!" Q: House Call Records represents a significant extension of your brand into the music industry. What inspired you to start your own label, and how do you envision its role in shaping the future of house music? A: "I've been a label head longer than I've been Dr. Fresch, so it's part of my core mission as Dr. Fresch. I was raised in California and spent my formative years as a resident DJ for Dim Mak and others in Hollywood in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I became passionate about electronic music production through blogs and labels like Dim Mak, Fool's Gold, Mad Decent, etc., so the label culture associated with that world inspired me to not only become an electronic music producer but also build a world of like-minded artists around me. In 2012 I started a label with my managers called Prep School Recordings and signed debut EPs from Louis The Child, SNBRN, Illenium, and more. Ultimately it was my experience working with all of these different artists on Prep School that helped me hone in on the Dr. Fresch sound, then leading me to launch House Call Records. I believe that House Call's growth (alongside not only my career but also the careers of all the artists on the label) is what will help shape the future of bass house music. Orlando Medina (House Call President) and I have been working together for several years and believe our joint A&R process and dedication to our eclectic sound is what will preserve the integrity of the label, and in turn, add to the dance music world in the most authentic way. The goal is to keep our motives pure and only sign real shit!!!" Q: Your rise to prominence was kickstarted by winning Insomniac’s Discovery Project Contest. Looking back, how do you feel this experience has shaped your career trajectory and approach to music? A: "Insomniac and the Discovery Project have played a huge role in my career! I had played several hundred gigs in LA and toured a bit as both Tony Fresch and Dr. Fresch by this point, but The Discovery Project 2013 was undoubtedly the moment that so many of the promoters I had played for and artists I had played alongside realized I wasn't playing games!! Insomniac's continued support helped cultivate my SoCal audience. The experience of playing Discovery Project and continuing on to DJ at larger stages helped give me the confidence to take risks in the studio and on stage; to be myself with my sound, and my goofy ass dance moves, haha." Q: Collaboration has played a key role in your music, allowing for the exploration of new sounds and ideas. Can you share your thoughts on the importance of collaboration in the creative process and any dream collaborations you have in mind? A: "Collaboration is central to dance music's story! The majority of electronic music producers who DJ will play out others' music as well as their own. Because we're DJing others' music that compliments our own, it only makes sense that we seek to work with other DJ /producers, too. The culture of dance music labels adds to this as well. I wouldn't be the artist I am today without working with other artists like BIJOU, for instance. On another note, because Hip-Hop is such a large part of the music I make, collaborating with rappers and vocalists that I feel complement my sound has been a part of the mission since day one! To bring it back to my breakdown of the Dr. Fresch sound - bringing Metal and Nu-metal into the equation has been crucial too. Realizing this at the highest level by collaborating with Tom Morello, Kirk Hammett, and Alex Lifeson was an absolute dream come true!! After working with these three, and Andre Nickatina, I realized that the dream was to continue to work with my favorite artists growing up, not just a big name because they're a big name. I want to work with the people whose posters I had on my wall. To add a couple more to the list - working with Disturbed or E-40 would be insane." Q: With a career that continuously evolves, are there any new directions or projects you're particularly excited about exploring in the near future, and what can fans expect from both Dr. Fresch and House Call Records? A: "Fans can expect more of what they love and we love on House Call - eclectic and energetic Bass House! I'm honored to bring House Call to a larger stage through Sol Fest and I think our collaboration and other live events is the real next step. It's time for House Call parties worldwide! Last but not least - in the future, I'm hoping to find an even greater meeting point between everything going on in Mid-Tempo Bass, Bass House, and DNB within my production... perhaps the right collab will be the answer to all this... or whatever you make of that :)" Innovating the Beat: Dr. Fresch's Continued Journey Through his responses, Dr. Fresch lays bare the ethos that drives his music and label forward: a commitment to innovation, authenticity, and collaboration. His journey from winning Insomniac’s Discovery Project Contest to establishing House Call Records highlights a career built on pushing boundaries and embracing change. As Dr. Fresch continues to explore new horizons and collaborations, the dance music world eagerly anticipates what’s next, knowing that whatever it is, it will certainly be "real shit."

  • Earth Signs: Pioneering the Future of Dance Music

In the dynamic world of electronic dance music, Earth Signs emerges as a pioneering duo, seamlessly blending house and techno rhythms with an infectious energy that captivates their audience. Their unique sound is a testament to their diverse influences and innovative approach to music production. As they navigate the complexities of the music industry, Earth Signs shares their journey, inspirations, and the vision that propels them forward. LISTEN TO EARTH SIGNS' ROAD TO ELEMENTS EXCLUSIVE MIX Unveiling the Beats: An Unedited Insight Through Q&A Diving into the essence of Earth Signs' musical journey, we present an untouched Q&A session that reveals the influences, processes, and aspirations at the heart of their collaborative venture. Q: Can you share which artists or genres have had the most significant influence on your sound, and how do they inspire your music? A: "We’re really into a few different artists at the moment…Gorgon City are on fire right now…Elena was shuffling to their music in 2017 so it’s been really awesome for her to see them evolve over the years with their music. We’re also just really inspired by how clean their sound design and mixes are. We’ve been vibing to a lot of Josh Butler’s music recently. His groove and swing are the real deal and we’re really enjoying everything we can find out of him. We watch a lot of sets online and we’ve been glued to a particular Pan Pot set for a few weeks and they’re super creative and inspiring djs and producers. In terms of influencing our sound it’s probably Ronnie Spiteri more than anyone else…his songs bridge the gap between house and techno in such a unique way. He keeps it super dancey and up-feeling and his catalog is legitimately chef's kiss. We’re really inspired by both house and techno and don’t necessarily want to lean in on one over the other, so seeing someone have such success in making both work has been super influential to us!" Q: What does your creative process look like when developing new tracks or mixes, and how do you collaborate within the group to bring these ideas to life? A: "Our creative process is always evolving! Our latest song “Want It (Dub)” was actually a pretty quick creation, but we then spent a ton of time on song structure and arrangement just through the act of playing it on repeat and dancing around together. We were really trying to listen to where our bodies and natural movements were trying to take the song and then using those discoveries to kind of lead our decision making. It was a really fun way for us to step away from the computer and make progress in a different way. We’re also always adding to a ton of different playlists that are categorized by specific feelings. That way when we’re putting together some of our mixes or even when we go into the process of working on a song together, we have emotional references to lean into. What’s most important to us is that we’re having fun while creating together! That energy is totally visible once you arrive at the final product and we’ve really been trying to remember that through our creative process." Q: What have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced as a group in the music industry, and how have you overcome them? A: "We’re still new in the industry as artists and we’re still learning how to balance Earth Signs with other commitments. Finding time to be creative and work on music has been a top priority for us this year and something that we want to continue to give our time to together. With this being so new for us it does come with a lot of firsts (our first festival which we are totally not freaking out about, our first song release, our first club show) and with a lot of firsts comes a lot of new experiences! Its such a freaking exciting time for us and we’re just trying to reflect and appreciate all of these firsts as we navigate through them! We’re also self-managed, so just working through all of the additional things that come with that takes time to figure out as well :)" "We are still buzzing from our set in Brooklyn last weekend!! The energy in the room was just everything that we could ask for and that all starts with the amazing humans who were there for the show! We try to vibe with everyone during our set as much as we can, but we always make it a point to go and spend time with whoever we can find after! It’s super important to us both to connect at that level with everyone that we can :)" "Both of us are always digging for new music and that’s where the preparation really starts. We definitely prepare groups of songs that we feel could work well for an upcoming gig, and depending on the situation we may decide to go in different directions depending on how the crowd is responding. We really do our best to be ready for anything when we’re up there and that all starts at home with our music library." "We do have a general rule though…if it makes Elena dance…we’re playing it." Q: Looking ahead, what are some goals you have for the group, and are there any exciting projects or collaborations you're currently working on or planning for the future? A: "We’re aiming for more festivals in 2025! AND we’ve been working on a lot of different styles of new music over the last few weeks and are looking to get those out and released this summer!" "We’re also really really focused on growing our incredible community! We are so grateful for our Shuffle House NYC fam and are going to continue to bring everyone together to connect and dance outside of the classroom! You are all so loved, and we appreciate you so much!!!" As Earth Signs continues to make waves in the electronic music scene, their journey is a vibrant mosaic of innovation, collaboration, and deep-rooted passion for the beats that move us. With each track, live set, and creative endeavor, they not only push the boundaries of house and techno but also forge a unique connection with their audience. The future holds exciting possibilities for Earth Signs, with aspirations for festival stages, new music releases, and growing their community. As they navigate the evolving landscapes of dance music, Earth Signs remains a testament to the power of music to inspire, connect, and transform, promising an electrifying journey ahead for both the duo and their fans.

This Nigerian-American sound artist, saxophonist, DJ, and producer has garnered attention for his ability to blend diverse musical elements into a cohesive and compelling narrative. Inspired by icons like Osunlade, Jeff Mills, and Fela Kuti, Fola's work is a testament to the power of music as a universal language capable of bridging disparate worlds. A Glimpse into Eli Fola's World: An Exclusive Q&A In a candid Q&A, Eli Fola delves into the inspirations, processes, and aspirations that define his musical journey. His responses, presented unaltered, offer a glimpse into the mind of a creator who is as thoughtful about his craft as he is passionate. Q: "Yoruba Tech Soul" represents a groundbreaking fusion of AfroHouse, techno, jazz, and classical music. Can you share the inspiration behind creating this genre and how your cultural heritage influences your music? A: "I see Yoruba Tech Soul more as a performance style than a genre. The inspiration came from my discovery of House and Techno music as a young Nigerian immigrant living in New York City. My first introduction to house music was through the music of Osunlade... The discovery of all this music inspired me to create my own unique style, which I call Yoruba Tech Soul, by incorporating the saxophone, traditional vocals from Nigeria on some of my records, and live drum percussion." Q: Your performances and productions are known for their depth and emotional resonance. How do you approach the creative process, and what role does the saxophone play in your compositions? A: "Music, to me, is all about the feeling and the ability for it to change your mood. My goal as a composer is to elevate the consciousness of the listeners of my music. The saxophone brings that emotional aspect into the music that I create, and it speaks to the audience in a very special way..." Q: As a multi-disciplinary artist, you've successfully bridged music with visual arts. Can you discuss how these different forms of expression complement each other in your work? A: "In this day and age, visuals play a unique role in how audiences receive music. Incorporating visuals into my work helps to convey the message I'm trying to spread through the music." Q: The electronic music scene is continually evolving. What trends or innovations excite you the most, and how do you see yourself contributing to these developments? A: "I really enjoy creating music that's fresh and original... I see myself contributing to the innovation in electronic music by incorporating live elements into my sets and productions." Q: Looking ahead, are there any new projects, collaborations, or musical directions you're excited to explore? A: "Last year I presented an audio visual project at the National Sawdust in New York titled Soundscapes... I'm looking forward to exploring the project and tour around with it across the world. I also have some exciting collaboration coming up with some amazing artists I look up to." A Glimpse Beyond the Music In addition to his musical prowess, Eli Fola shares three fun facts that paint a fuller picture of the man behind the saxophone: a self-taught musician, a late-blooming swimmer, and a master in marketing. These details underscore the multifaceted nature of an artist who continues to surprise, innovate, and inspire. The Road Ahead Eli Fola's journey is a vivid illustration of the transformative power of music. As he continues to explore, create, and innovate, his work remains a beacon for those who seek a deeper connection to sound and spirit.
